Butterflies

I have always had an interest in wildlife more so with birds and birding, as you may have gathered, with a little knowledge of other things. Over the last couple of years and especially this year, 2010, I have found myself having more than a passing interest in butterflies, now whether this is down to the photography side or the splendor of the colours on some of the butterflies I don’t know but I plan to share these new travels on this separate page to give it the space it deserves and I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do. 58 Species in Great Britain…. Huddersfield Sites

Work – [SE189142],  Small Wood along with surrounding fields has been a good source of getting to grips with the common species of butterfly. This site has yielded 16 species to date (Aug 2010)

Large White, Small White, Green Veined White, Speckled Wood, Comma, Peacock, Red Admiral, Small Skipper, Large Skipper, Small Heath, Small Copper, Ringlet, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Tortoiseshell, Common Blue, Orange Tip

Carlecotes Ponds – In the Langsett Area of the HBW good for the not so ordinary butterfly at SE178 034 , Dingy Skipper, Green Hairstreak being a couple

Shelly Whins – At Shelly on Far Bank Road near the Infants School at SE202 111 [http://www.shelleytimes.org.uk/sca_191.htm] one of the best places in Huddersfield for Butterflies with over 20 species recorded including Purple Hairstreak

Thurstonland Bank – At SE159101, Sloping grass banks, good for Common Blue, Small heath, Commas, Speckled Wood, Purple Hairstreak and with Dark Green Fritilary recorded in 2011

Thunderbridge Meadows – You can find a Large Car Park at SE188 115  [53.600298 / -1.716098] entrance to the Meadows is at SE187 114 (53.599217 / -1.717737).  One of the better places in Huddersfield to find White letter Hairstreaks along with the commner species.

Gait Burrows  in Cumbria > At SD478776 [54.191645/-2.800934] or (LA7 7LF – nearest post code)  Park in road side car park, I believe you need a permit to park in the reserve, owned by Natural England, the reserve to find the Duke of Burgundy, High brown and Pearl-bordered Fritillary along with 800 species of moth
