PLACES TO STAY [The star * rating is my rating and does not reflect the actual rating given by certain Tourist Boards]
Acer Lodge [Ickburgh – Thetford] ***** Bed and Breakfast > Trip Advisor Site No official website. Run by Dawn and Paul, brilliant hosts always willing to help, situated in a quiet location just north of Lynford Arboretum. I found this to be a great place, quiet, clean, spacious, great bed and shower, and a super breakfast, what more could you ask for. You can view the bird feeders at breakfast, plenty of House Sparrows, Blue Tit and Great Spotted Woodpeckers. I have no worries in recommending this place, a 5* from me.
Bridge Cottage [Woodnewton] ***** > [Official Website] We found this B&B back in August 2006 and is now top of the list as B&B’s go for us wonderful place to be, peaceful, quiet setting with a stream running along side, 10 miles from Peterborough, 20 miles from Rutland Water. Judy, the host, cooks a wonderful breakfast, great for bird life what we’ve seen from within the gardens Red Kite, Green Woodpecker, Hobby, Buzzard, Kingfisher, Mandarin Duck, Goldcrest, Blue Tit, Great Tit. [SADLY NOW CLOSED DUE TO RETIREMENT]
Castle Farm [Fotheringhay] > [Official Website] As an alternative to number 2 above, not been to date, recommended by Bridge Cottage
Challan Hall [Silverdale Nr Carnforth]*** > [Offical Website]. The Hall is situated near the road, but this isn’t a problem around here because it’s that quiet and overlooks the Hawes Water Lake. Situated in the Silverdale and Arnside area it is only Half a mile away from Leighton Moss RSPB reserve. The Hall is next to the lower part of the Gait Burrows Nature Reserve and is and ideal base for the Leighton Moss/ Gait Burrows/ Warton Cragg and Arnside Nature Reserves. Overall the Hall is smart, clean, great hosts with and ideal breakfast to start the days. Would use it again.
Culdene [Warton nr Leighton Moss RSPB reserve] **** Self cattering Cottage for two [offical website], The cottage is in the village of Warton near Warton Cragg and is ideally situated for Leighton Moss RSPB reserve, Arnside Knott, Gait Burrows etc. They have a large well kept garden and a small holding. The place is quiet on an evening and my sleep wasn’t broken. The cottage itself is clean, very tidy and spacious especially the living room and bedroom.
Diary Cottage [Parc Yr Odyn Pentraeth on Anglesey] *** > [Official Website] Situated on a working Farm which is remarkably quiet, cottage is clean and tidy. The room is an all in one Living/Kithen and sleeping quaters there is a seperate room for bathroom/toilet, there is a log fire and under floor heating. Makes a good base for Anglesey birdwatching most sites within thrity minutes drive, South Stack, Valley, Cemlyn etc
Grays Cottage [Nr Toller Pocorum Dorset] > **** Self cattering Cottage for two [OfficalWebsite] The cottage is based near the town of Toller Pocorum and is ideally situated fro Powerstock Common and Kingcombe Meadows, two great butterfly sites. The cottage is set in an area of a small farm, but I must say is rather quiet. The wildlife in the area is brilliant, we found the cottage warm and clean. Living room and bed is in one large room with a small kitchen off. The bathroom is small with a bath, basin and toilet. The hosts Lesley and Nigel are very welcoming and friendly.
Laundimer House [Nr Weldon, Corby, Northamptonshire] ***** Bed and Breakfast [Offical website] . For me an idyllic setting a lonely house at the end of a dirt track, farmland all round and a large wood that takes you eventually on to Fermyn Wood, Red Kites and Buzzards overhead Woodpeckers and Nuthatch in the wood. The room itself was clean, comfy, quiet. The room I had was the Cabin which is the single occupancy room and there is only room for one, but it has its one shower and toilet. The host Dawn is wonderful, a warm greeting, and a great breakfast. Gets a 5* from me
The Cat Basket [Oakham Nr Rutland]***** Self Cattering for two {Discover Rutland website} The cottage is a converted gamekeepers cottage for the nearby Manor and is now owned by John & Marliyn along with their friendly pets (2 dogs > Miss Fudge and Petra < & 2 cats > Jake and Cleo<). They have a wonderful large garden with lots of bird life due to the feeders they have out. They Cottage its self is has a spacious living area with dining table, small kitchen, bedroom and shower/toilet area. The cottage is in a quiet area despite the main road a field width away (we never heard the traffic late evening…and I’m a light sleeper) it’s good clean and tidy and is well worth my 5*. Rutland Water 5 mins by car.
