Langsett Reservoir Area

Early start today due to the draw of Flycatchers in the area. I arrived in the Langsett barns Car park at about 8:20am, to a nearly empty car park, good timing on my part, got the gear together and off I went.

On route to the Flycatcher area I passed a singing Chiffchaff and a Goldfinch, I didn’t find anything on the reservoir or the dam wall. Eventually I got to the wood, starting here with the sound of Nuthatch, Blue Tits and Great Tits. I made my way slowly thru the wood, stopping occasionally, to look and listen, but no Flycatchers. A small group of people had started to follow me, presumably with the same goal in mind, one lady finally found our quarry, a single female Pied Flycatcher, going into a nest box, a distant one, well away from the path.

We watched for a while, people eventually started to drift away, leaving me to myself, so I settled in and continued to watch. I watched the female Pied Flycatcher come and go, with nest material, with the Male Pied Flycatcher popping in occasionally, due to the distance I couldn’t get any decent photos, the Nikon P950 is good for reach, but the AF is awful. Other bird highlights were Nuthatch and a Great spotted Woodpecker.

After dinner I went around to the other side of the reservoir, after parking up and getting out of the car I heard Raven, suddenly they were overhead, three birds in total, they stayed around for about fifteen minutes, flying around and calling, a great sight to watch, there were also in the area, Swallows, Red Grouse, Skylarks and Willow Warbler.

On then to Wombwell Ings, a friends birthday, we ended up at Adwick Washlands seeing, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Dunnock and Robin on our way into the reserve. At the first pool were plenty of Avocets, a few nice looking Black tailed Godwits, Redshank, a few Black headed Gulls, Teal, Gadwall, Lapwing, Moorhen and Coot.

On then to the lookout area, after watching a showy Cetti’s Warbler, to hopefully find our target birds Yellow Wagtails and Wheatear, we saw neither, we moved on further down the lane to another pool, this one was half dry, but Yellow Wagtails were eventually seen, at least three birds seem, maybe four.

After a tip off, we went back down to the lookout area, seeing a few Swallows overhead and a Little Egret dropping in. At the lookout area, back looking for the Wheatear, a no show, but a Sedge Warbler made a quick burst of song, just to say it was there, attention went back to the Wheatear, which eventually popped up into view

RSPB Old Moor 10th April

Another sunny day and another day at Old Moor, the draw today was a pair of Black necked Grebes, they would be a new species for me at Old Moor (121), for this location. It wasn’t long before stepping into the reserve, that I was distracted by the song of a Reed Warbler (149), near the crossroads, so I stop in the hope of seeing it, maybe a photo too, I saw it moving around in the reeds, then it flew out seeing off a Blue Tit.

I made my way down towards the wader scrape, stopping first at the lookout hide, in the hope of yesterday’s Mediterranean Gulls but no joy, after looking thru countless Black headed, Lesser Black backed and Herring Gulls, other birds were Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Teal, Moorhen, Coot, Mute Swan, Greylag Geese, Canada Geese, and Cormorants.

Moving on then to Wader Scrape via Green Lane, overlooking the mere as I went, Redshank, Oystercatcher, seen, then I saw the Black necked Grebes but try as I could I couldn’t get a photo, think it was low down and heat haze that was the problem, I also had the problem with a Little Egret in the same area. After the Grebes I decided on putting my concentration in to the insects, seeing, Common Wasps, Bees, Spiders, Gorse Shieldbugs, Butterflies around were Brimstone, Green veined White, Orange tip, Peacocks, and Speckled Woods and also a Willow Warbler.

After my time at Old Moor I called in at Wombwell Ings, to see the male Garganey, took some finding, it was at the far side of the lake, need help in doing so, also on show were Skylarks, Little Ringed Plover, Ruff, Greenshank (150), Redshanks, Canada and Egyptian Geese

Ripon City Wetlands

A new Reserve today, I thought I would give it a call as I was in the area for a couple of days. A great day lovely and sunny, the site is virtually next door to the Ripon Racecourse, which seemed to have a lake in the centre of the course, here I could see, Mute Swan, plenty of Greylag Geese, with a few Oystercatchers.

Walking further in to the reserve, there were Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps calling from the bushes, I soon came across on of the reserve lakes, however the sun was shining straight in to my face across the water, making it difficult to see anything. It was good to hear hear Chiffchaff and Blackcaps again, I finally made it around to the canal side of the reserve, where there is kind of a hide come screen setup, I could see a bit better here as the sun was now side on, birds here were Mute Swan, a male Goldeneye, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, a pair of Common Buzzard, it appeared the Buzzards had made camp on the Osprey platform, I also heard a booming Bittern from here.

After dinner, I went over to the river side of the reserve and found an area with Primrose, a few butterflies down here with, Orange tip being the common one, also Brimstone, Peacocks and the Dark edged Bee Fly, with my first Willow Warbler of the year

RSPB Old Moor

Seems a waste if I didn’t go out in this nice sunny weather, so I forced myself to go down to Old Moor, there was a report of a Little Gull on site this morning.

Arriving at 9am, I seemed to have the reserve to myself for a while, I didn’t come across anyone, which was unusual, anyway first stop was the feeders, Reed Bunting, Bullfinch, Dunnock, Goldfinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, and Blackbird, the usual crew for here. I then moved, heading towards the Wath Ings Hide direction, calling in at the Lookout Hide first to look thru the Gulls, Black headed, Lesser Black backed, and Herring Gulls were present, no Mediterranean present and no Little Gull.

On to Green Lane were you can look over the Mere at head height, depending on how tall you are, looking thru the gulls once again, talking with another guy, he had just found a first winter Little Gull, not the reported Adult of earlier. Other birds here were Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Moorhen, a Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, two Buzzards overhead, a calling Cetti’s Warbler from the nearby bushes with a Chiffchaff giving the “chiff” “chaff” type call.

Popping in to Wader scrape hide, saw no waders and very little birds, I moved on to Wath Ings hide, seeing a couple of Butterflies on route Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell, only thing new at Wath Ings, was a Goldeneye ♀, Cormorants anbd a calling Little Grebe.

Down on the loop, I came across a few Gorse Shieldbugs, Common Wasps, and various species of Bees, a small fly with nicely marked wings (Tephritis crepidis), Brimstone Butterfly, calling Oystercatchers overhead with Lapwings on the East Pool.

Birds Seen : Black headed Gull, Blue Tit, Bullfinch, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Cetti’s Warbler, Chiffchaff, Coot, Cormorant, Dunnock, Gadwall, Goldeneye, Goldfinch, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Greylag Goose, Herring Gull, Lapwing, Lesser Black backed Gull, Little Grebe, Little Gull, Mallard, Marsh Harrier, Moorhen, Oystercatcher, Pochard, Red Kite, Reed Bunting, Robin, Shoveler, Teal, Tufted Duck, Wigeon (34)

Blacktoft Sands and North Cave

A day out with friends today, first port of call was Blacktoft Sands, taking in the farmland a around Blacktoft, finding Meadow Pipits, and a single Corn Bunting.

At Blacktoft, we ventured into the Marshland hide first, seeing our target bird here, the Garganey, male and female birds, sleeping most of the time, occasionally lifting there heads, other birds at Marshland were Avocet, Black tailed Godwit, Shoveler, Snipe, Teal and Sand Martins, with a Barn Owl in the nest box. We made our way thru the reserve to the sound of Cetti’s Warblers, Blue Tit and Chaffinch, we saw many Marsh Harriers at Blacktoft, from various hides. At the feeders were Tree Sparrow, Great Tit and Chaffinch.

Our next port of call was North Cave Wetlands, with the Turret Hide being our first port of call, hoping for a Bittern, this wasn’t to be, so we made our way back to the shelter where we got sight of a Little Ringed Plover along with Shelduck, Redshank, and Tufted Duck. At the feeders, further along Dryham Lane, Goldfinch, Linnet, Long tailed Tit, Wren, and Robin.

With Bittern being our main target, we decided on going around to Far Ings, back on the road and across the bridge. On arrival we went to the East Ness Hide, where eventually I had my best ever encounter with Bitterns, what and ending

A lovely sunny day, and warm, no gloves today, I was hoping today for a few insects. I started at the feeders, a Chiffchaff was calling overhead, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Robin, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Reed Bunting and Dunnock were all seen, I then moved off towards the Reedbed Hide.

On arrival I found the hide full, so I stayed outside, only highlight was a male Marsh Harrier flying thru, no Bearded Tits around, so I made my back, catching sight of a few Peacock butterflies and a few Small Tortoiseshells.

I had a little time in the Bittern Hide, overlooking the mere, seeing various Gull species Black headed Gulls, Common Gulls, Herring Gulls and Lesser Black backed Gulls with Little and Great Crested Grebes, Greylag and Canada Geese, Grey Heron and Mute Swans with five distant Buzzards.

After dinner I ventured down to the Green Loop, catching sight of a Comma butterfly, around the lookout hide, with Gorse Shieldbugs sunny themselves, there were also a few found down on Green Lane, along with Honey Bees, and Common Wasps. There wasn’t much from Wath Ings hide, so I went onto the Wader Scrape hide where there were a few Goosanders (2♂, 3♀), also a single Curlew, back near the visitor centre a single Brimstone butterfly

Day Out in Lincolnshire

First port of call was to Bourne for the Dark Breasted Barn Owl. Arrived early to a few cars already parked along the road side, staying in the car, we eventually , were entertained to a great display by the Barn Owl . This bird originates in North East and Central Europe.

We then moved onto Deeping Lakes, a place run by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, a small reserve, but lots to see, large car park, but no amenities. Viewing from the car park, Sand Martin a plenty, coming and going to the Martin bank. Moving on from the car park and along the river, to place, where a viewing, where we could view the Glossy Ibis (2) and a single Cattle Egret along with Snipe, Egyptian Geese, the sound of Cetti’s Warbler and Chiffchaff. Further on we saw Little Egret, Little Owl and Green Woodpeckers. Further into the reserve we were showed where a roosting Long eared Owl, the Owl was partially obscured, but a nice sighting anyways. Other birds on sight were Black headed Gull, Coot, Cormorant, Goldeneye, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Herring Gull, Mallard, Mute Swan, Pochard, Teal, Red Kite, and Woodpigeon.

We then moved onto Eldernell, it was raining when we turned up, so we had dinner, watching Marsh Harrier, Spoonbill, Little and Great Egret from the car, we eventually moved off and we went down to the Tawny Owl roost site, it took some finding, but finding it we did.

Our last call of the day was to RSPB Frampton Marsh, and made our way down to the saltmarsh as soon as we arrived, as we made our way down, we saw the drake Scaup, Avocets, Black tailed Godwits, Sand Martins, the female Peregrine was on the barn, Spoonbill, Dunlin, Ringed Plovers, always lots to see at Frampton.

At the saltmarsh, it was now very windy, a few Meadow Pipits, Brent Geese, a few Marsh Harriers, Sparrowhawk, Peregrine again, we were hoping for a Short eared Owl, to make it five Owls for the day, none showed up, but at 5:15pm however, a Ringtail Hen Harrier showed up

Budby, Willow Tree and Frampton

The day started at Budby Common at 8am, very quiet on the walk in, seeing Goldcrest, Blue Tit and Long tailed Tits. Once we were in the clearing, we picked a solo Woodlark, preening on a fence post, we were of course hoping to pick up on a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, our efforts were in vain, this is a bird that is on the increasing down list, and is becoming a rare UK species, we heard Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker and Nuthatch. After an hour at the LSW site we decided on going back to the car, back at the car park, mulling over what to do next, we saw Buzzards and Red Kites, over dinner we decided on Willow Tree Fen and Frampton Marsh

Willow Tree Fen on the approach roads gave many, Buzzards and a group of Cattle Egrets, plenty of Mute Swans and a Stonechat. Willow Tree gave us what we went for, with a few Common Cranes, with plenty of Marsh Harriers, with one bird in particular in displaying mode. Other birds a Willow Tree were Shovelers, Wigeon, Gadwall, Teala couple of Great Egrets, a close Buzzard coming in and settling close by also lots of Starlings, a few Fieldfares, a sizeable amount of Golden Plovers and Lapwing, a Kestrel doing what Kestrels do, hover.

On then to the favourite place, Frampton Marsh and here once again I didn’t know where to look first, lots to see and hear. Visitor Centre stop and look from here, we saw Whooper Swans, Greylag Geese, a distant ale Scaup in with the Tufted Duck, Pintail, Teal. Walking on then down to the saltmarsh area, then the dilemma of which side to look first, lots going on, Brent Geese, Redshank, Oystercatcher flocks of Dunlin, Ruff and Black tailed Godwits, Black headed Gulls, Curlew, Wigeon, Gadwall and sat on a fence post a Peregrine, probably a female due to the size.

At the saltmarsh there were mainly Marsh Harriers moving about, a walk along the bank, towards the river gave us, Ringed Plover, Ruff, Avocet, Black tailed Godwit and Black headed Gulls. We finally made it around to the 360° hide, where we spotted, Wigeon, Snipe, Pintail, Avocet, Meadow Pipit and a distant Barn Owl. Final stop was the reedbed hide, where we viewed the Scaup again, along with a brief encounter with the Barn Owl

RSPB St Aidan’s

Another visit out to ST Aidan’s, this time with a few friends, main target again was the Firecrest, and after the last two visit’s, this time I got great view’s, although the bird was again very mobile and moving quickly thru the bushes, which was once again very difficult to to obtain a photo. Other birds in the area were Blackbird, Robin, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long tailed Tit and Redpoll.

Onto the reserve then to find the Slavonian Grebe, which apparently was on the western reedbed, after a little searching, I picked up the grebe in a group of three birds, the other two being Black necked Grebes. Other birds in the location were Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Tufted Duck, Mallard, Pochard, Teal, Black headed Gulls, Herring Gulls, Lesser Black backed Gulls, Grey Heron, Shoveler, Great Egret, and booming Bitterns.

It was then a walk towards the visitor centre, seeing a couple of Red Kites, Buzzard, Kestrel, Skylark, hearing Cetti’s Warbler, Canada Geese, the Little Owl at the dragline was a no show today, at the feeders were Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Reed Bunting, Blue Tit and Great Tit.

After coffee and cake, it was back to the Firecrest site, but it was a no show on this occasion

RSPB St Aidan’s

The draw at St Aidan’s today was a Firecrest, which had located itself at the far side of the reserve, a long walk ensued. Making my way down slowly, taking in the other birds on my way, two Common Buzzards, were my first attraction, high over the hillside, further down, among the grasses, was a distant Male Stonechat, other birds encountered on the way were, Canada Goose, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Moorhen, Coot, Curlew, Lapwing, Great White Egret.

I eventually arrived at the Firecrest sight, it was still showing around the area, but was very mobile, it kept disappearing for a while before popping up again, usually away from where I was standing, I was never in the right place at the right time. There were other birds in the area to pass the time away, plenty of Redpoll and Siskin.

After a few hours I gave up on the Firecrest and made my way back to the visitor centre, coffee and cake time, also time at the feeders watching Long tailed Tits, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Reed Bunting, Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Chaffinch.

I revisited St Aidan’s again on the 22nd for another stab at the Firecrest, and eventually saw brief views of it, amongst the dense vegetation, no video or photos were obtainable, I did that day however get good flight views of a Bittern

A visit on the 21st February to a local site, Ingbirchworth Reservoir, gave me views of a White fronted Goose for the year.

I also had another visit to St Aidan’s on the 25th February, and got to see the Firecrest again, better views this time

You can see the video of the days combined HERE on You Tube
