A Big Day Out

The day started at Broomhill Flash which is managed by the Garganey trust, at 7am, Broomhill was quiet, the highlight being a Marsh Harrier trying to make a meal out of a Teal, which narrowly escaped thanks to a nearby bush, other birds noted were Oystercatcher, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Gadwall, and Mallard.

We moved on then to Wombwell Ings, which is the next field over from Broomhill Flash, all part of the Dearne Valley complex, target here for the day was Water Pipit, which was a no show, Redshank, and Skylarks were very notable, along with Reed Buntings, wildfowl here were Canada Goose, Shoveler, Tufted Duck, Wigeon, Cormorant.

We then moved on to Warbler Way, where there were more Chiffchaff, but we also picked up new birds for the year, Willow Warbler and a male Blackcap, we also found Buzzard and Sparrowhawk.

On then to RSPB Old Moor, target bird here was Garganey, and again a no show bird, however there were plenty to see, Little Egret, Teal, Wigeon, Shelduck, Pintail, Tufted Duck, plenty of Cetti’s Warblers were giving out there explosive songs, a few of the birds even gave excellent views. A new bird for the year was a Common Sandpiper, which we found from the East Pool Hide. The best place for me today was at the Tree Sparrow Farm were there were plenty of birds to see and photograph, Goldfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Robin, Dunnock, Bullfinch, Lesser Redpoll, Brambling, Great Tit and Blue Tit.

Our last site for the day was RSPB St Aidan’s on the reports of another Gargeney, and once again no show, despite extensive searching. Our highlights at here were, the Black necked Grebes, Bearded Tit, an in flight Bittern, Willow Warblers, Blackcap and a single Sand Martin.

Brambling

Bramblings Galore

I was a little bit stuck this time for my outing, due to the water levels and the floods, so I opted for North Cave Wetlands and hopefully share in the sightings of the reported Bramblings there.

I arrived on site at about 8:30am to a nice sunrise, so a dry day might be in favour. Got the gear together and set off down the East path towards the maize field feeders, but stopped off at the East Hide first, to very little excitement, Mute Swans, Teal and Mallards being of note. Carrying on then down to the feeders, and hopefully the target bird. On arrival I picked up straight away, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Tree Sparrow, Robin, Blackbird and Dunnock, no Brambling, so I waited, the feeders are near the road, so I thought that this may have sent the Bramblings elsewhere, but I needn’t have worried, ten minutes and the Bramblings showed up, and in good numbers too, a number I hadn’t seen for a long time.

After the spectacle of the Bramblings, I called in at the Turret Hide and hopefully a Bittern. The Bittern wasn’t to be today only Sheep, a Highland Cow, Dunnock and a Wren. So moving swiftly on and down towards the Reedbed and Far Lakes seeing Rooks, Crows, and Jackdaws for my trouble of negotiating the very muddy pathway, only birds seen down here from the hide were battling Coots. Moving on again and towards the Far Lake, I picked up on a Goldcrest moving along the nearby hedgerow, I stopped once again at the seat down here and the nearby feeders to enjoy Long tailed Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Chaffinch and Greenfinch.

A small crowd had gathered half way down the path, I pulled up to and started to watch more Bramblings, it was enjoyable here as the birds were more in their natural habitat, rather than around feeders. Moving on again I stopped down at the corner, where you can look over Crossland Lake, here I found Lapwing and an Egyptian Goose. Carp Lake held a good number of wildfowl namely, Tufted Duck, Mallard, Shoveler, Wigeon and Teal. it was dinner time.

After dinner I decided on walking down Dryham Lane and towards the new workings, Cell 1a and Cell 2a. I found a few new bird species for the day along here, Pochard, Shelduck. Little Egret, Marsh Harrier ♀, Kestrel and Bullfinch.

Broadstones and Ingbirchworth Reservoirs

Noon start at Ingbirchworth saw a few Meadow Pipits and Pied Wagtails  going thru along with 6-off Redwings. Looking around a huge flock of Starlings lifted into the sky revealing a Sparrowhawk giving chase, and with Little Grebe (3), Great Crested Grebe (1) on the water with the usual host of Mallard and Canada Geese. and a handful of Black Headed Gulls. I decided to move into the small wooded area to find Blackbirds, Robin, Chaffinch, Wren and the Redwings, the fly overs I think.

A move then after an hour from here to Ingbirchworth Res to try and find the bird that has been eluding me all year. It took a while and not before seeing a fine male Great Spotted Woodpecker, Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit and a 1-off male Brambling and then the bird I’d hoped for Willow Tit right in front of me down to a couple of feet calling as well a better than hoped for encounter. On the Reservoir water Mallard, Canada Geese, Greylag Geese, Tufted Duck, Moorhen, 3-off Wigeon and a lot of Black Headed Gulls and 2-off Common Gulls
